This gorgeous, creative, funny (woman feels weird...girl feels weird....chick?) lady is a MASTER at a winged liner.  That's neither here nor there, I was just continuously impressed with her skills. Salome has amazing blue eyes and the liner and lashes really made them pop.

There's always a back and forth in the photographer world regarding "chimping". If I ever knew the etymology of that phrase, I have forgotten it. But it means looking at your camera as you're shooting to see how the shots are coming along. I think it's really bizarre that there is a negative connotation as lighting changes a lot, double checking on blinks, etc. I do it. I don't spend a lot of time going through everything, but I like to see that things are going well, and if I should try another pose in a location.

THEN there's multiple discussions as to whether or not photographers should show their subject the in camera images. Some photographers over expose, under expose intentionally so they can edit as they wish in post and don't want to show those images to the customer. Other photographers don't want to show the in camera images as they may cull them and not offer them to the customer for whatever reason.

Why do I choose to show the back of my camera to customers as I go? Because I'M excited and want to show it off. Because I want to HYPE THEM UP. Because I want to get a feel for what they're thinking.

In all my time, even when I have seasoned models, there's always a warm up period. There's ALWAYS a "what do I do with my hands?!"  There's always the worry that they don't look good. You know what happened when I showed Salome the photo below?

"YOU WENT EDITORIAL ON THIS SHOOT!" Yep. She saw my vision. She dug it. She paraphrased Tay Money and told me that I understood the assignment. That, my friends, is the biggest compliment I could've gotten that day.

When Salome wanted to her location to be Munsinger Gardens I got super excited. I haven't been there in YEARS. It is gorgeous. I was thrilled that the blooms were still looking pretty good and the colors were amazing.

The variety of textures available, as well as the colors to mix into the foreground and background, well, I can't ask for much more.

I first went to Munsinger when I was probably Salome's age. I was already a photographer (first wedding at 18 years old!) and when I saw these gardens, I immediately wanted to have an Alice in Wonderland themed shoot there. I still haven't done it, but I'm still hopeful that I will.

I told Salome that she was giving me Gothic Little Red vibes. I wish I had a wolf.... While typing that I just decided I should see what I can find to do a creative piece for her. Hmm...

Pure bliss when you're happy shows through your eyes. Or even your eyes closed. Several times during the shoot Salome would close her eyes and smile. I do that, too, when I'm just vibing the moment. Maybe I'm projecting, but I would like to think that is what was happening for her as well.

Salome was accompanied by her boyfriend of two years. I know I sound like such and adult (hahaha) when I say that Larson is SUCH an impressive young man.  I know parents wonder how their kids act when they're not around. I was super impressed by the both of them. When I had Salome lay on her stomach and kick her feet up for a pose, Larson noticed that their were stickers on the bottom of her shoes and he stood there and picked them off. It's the little things that are the most impressive for me.

Sorry to say it, Moms, but sometimes the Seniors actually do better without you there. I mean this in the absolutely most nicest way.

My personal experience with this: My Dad did my Senior portraits. He's the reason I got into photography in the first place. I felt so awkward. And he totally Dad-ed me. "Stand up straight!" "Smile your real smile!" That sort of thing.

I get it. These are things we all want. Real smiles and not slouching, I guess.

But I GOT YOU.  Trust me when I say that my self deprecating jokes usually get laughs. If that doesn't work, I have a whole artillery to get some sort of real smile.

I'm NOT saying not to come.  But perhaps give us a bit of space. ;)

"This is why I watch America's Next Top Model".

Yes.

Watch the shows. Practice in the mirror. Know your sides. Smile with your eyes. When you hear the camera shutter make a slightly different face.

perfect.

When I started editing the images, I messaged Salome and said, "I'm trying to decide just how Evanescence I want to go with this."

I LOVE it when people do my crazy ideas. LOVE IT. Yes, it was cold. Yes, she got wet. YES, THESE PICTURES ARE LIFE.

Bonus picture of Larson and Salome because they're adorable.

Matthew & Bobbie Jo Get Married https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2021/10/matthew-bobbie-jo-get-married As soon as Bobbie Jo asked me about photographing her wedding I was excited. For her, for her boys, for everyone.

Then she started sending me pictures of the bridal party outfits and dresses, the boutonnieres, the boys' outfits.

Every time I got more and more excited.  I loved that she was sharing details with me and I LOVED her style!

So, what are weddings like during COVID?  Well, I must say they fluctuate back and forth per the current regulations. However, this one was delightfully intimate.

I have so many "A River Runs Through It" vibes. Boho. Peter Pan? Lost Boys (Not in the vampire way).

Matthew made the trellis himself finding the perfect branches in the woods that weekend.

It was absolutely STUNNING to see dozens and dozens of dragonflies, moths, butterflies. It made the day so much more special.

The boys were enamored with them. Below you can see the "bride butterfly" which may, in fact, be a white moth.

I had never seen a hand binding ceremony before. When all the bits of rope are wrapped around the bride and groom's hands correctly, when they pull away, a knot will form when the ends are pulled and it is tightened.

You may see the bride butterfly makes another appearance in this picture. I LOVE THIS PICTURE! I love the rug, I love his face, I love his outfit. I love the bride butterfly.

When photographing children, especially on a big day where there's a lot going on (hello, like a wedding) you gotta get on their level. Physically, mentally, all the things. Attention span. The boys loved the big sticks, the insects, the water. And that is what I wanted to capture them enjoying.

I had never met Matthew. Bobbie Jo and I worked together a few years ago. They fit together perfectly. They just make sense.

Showing off another butterfly.

I want these pictures blown up on my wall and they're not even my children!

Tantalizing Tiffany https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2021/2/tantalizing-tiffany I've known Tiffany since we were 5. I have so many fond memories with her playing at the playground, in school, throughout the years. And now she's a mom of three beautiful girls and a wonderful wife.

Tiffany was so excited about this session! She purchased several great outfits and also used pieces from her collection.  It's so fun to get a new special piece for a surprise gift.

Tiffany went with the full package with glamorous makeup and gorgeous hair. What a great way to pamper yourself!

When you know what your best asset is, or what your partner fancies the most about you, tell me! I want to show off what you're working with.

Tiffany brought some great ideas with her. She requested a wet t-shirt look. I worked through how to do get that to happen as my studio does not have a shower, but some other ideas came along and now we have our look.

I am always hung up on a title. Always. ALWAYS. It is what it is. ;)

Crystal Blue Persuasion https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2021/2/crystal-blue-persuasion Crystal was the very first boudoir shoot I ever did. It was in her basement and I had a plain white backdrop and my studio lighting and I thought I knew what I was doing and totally did not. Not with boudoir at least.  I was not good at directing poses, encouraging confidence, NOT having BRIGHT LIGHTING....I thought it was a good idea at the time.

Ten or so years, two babies, and a divorce later, Crystal was on board for having a new shoot.  Having gone through a divorce myself, I am completely empathetic and understanding of what it's like to find yourself again. Feeling good for yourself. Feeling sexy for yourself. Feeling strong for yourself.

I've also had stretchmarks since I was 12. I was told it was because my breasts grew too quickly. Is that a thing? Then through the years I got them on my belly. As much as I see mine and wish they weren't there, I don't really notice other people's. But stretchmarks from babies?  That's beautiful. Not being able to have children myself, I see those marks as a privilege.

I want to put my customers at ease. I will listen to your fears, worries, trepidations, and think about how to make you feel comfortable and confident. I like to tell people, "That's what carefully placed sheets and lighting are for!" and I'm very serious about that.

I LOVE that Crystal was so excited and listened to my ideas, gave me her ideas, and then went on a shopping spree. That blanket, those outfits, I think even the shoes are all for this shoot. Then she got the pampering treatment on her face before her makeup application.

I often try poses and ideas just to see. I'm not too proud to not be able to admit that what I picture in my head can't always work in real life. But sometimes, many times, I surprise myself and my models surprise me even more!

Be bold. Be brave. Be you. Try a new thing with me. You may surprise yourself. In fact, I KNOW you will surprise yourself!

You are beautiful. You are strong. You are capable. You are caring. Courageous. Intentional.  Treat yourself. You deserve it. I go at your level of comfort. I may suggest ideas to encourage you try something new. Let's see what we can do!

Miss Sara if You're Nasty https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2021/2/miss-sara-if-youre-nasty

Not only is Sara my derby wifey, she is also a mother of two beautiful children whom I love dearly. We've known each other for 10 years now and we have had all sorts of adventures. We did another boudoir shoot in 2012 I believe it was. I've used some of her shots in advertising boudoir shoots!

Sara had so many great outfit choices that she brought with her to the session. We had so much fun going through the outfits and putting them together.

This flag is a perfect example of bringing props that mean something to you. Sara had just gotten it in the mail a couple days before the shoot!  I love that she had an idea and found the props to make it happen.

During a session I take several photographs and then cull them down to the best of the best. I then edit them to my standard and share them in a gallery. My client can then pick which images they want to fulfill what's included in the package. They can also order beautiful leather albums, metallic prints, accordian albums, desk prints, and much more.

What makes YOU feel empowered? Sexy? Strong? Courageous? INVINCIBLE!?

Boudoir Basics: What to Bring https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2020/11/boudoir-basics-what-to-bring I have been racking my brain trying to think of things you should bring to your boudoir shoot. Here's a random list of things.

stockings (thigh high are super cute)

brush

makeup (If you have something specific you want the MUA to use)

hats

jewelry (chunky earrings, bracelets, rings, necklaces of various lengths, barrettes, anklets)

jersey (your favorite team...or your partner's favorite!)

partner's underwear

button up shirt

tie

jeans

extra panties

fun bras

partner's t shirt

heels

boots

water (to drink) (or to spray)

tell me your music choice (I have a record player and a bluetooth speaker with Amazon music....we have options!)

a friend (if you want!)

coconut oil (doesn't absorb like lotion, doesn't get overly wet like baby oil)

cufflinks

belt buckle

Stream of consciousness: Jeans, white t shirt, black t shirt, button up shirt, tie, belt, watch, belt, hat, suit coat? NICE underwear. Not fancy. I mean not ratty. Glasses. Towel.

CLEAN AND TRIMMED ears, nose, finger and toe nails. I cannot express this enough.  Your feet WILL be in images.  Your hands and fingernails WILL be in images.

Wear loose clothing to the photo shoot so you don't have sock lines, bra lines, lines from anything, really....

 Your favorite books.  Yes. Books.

Lots of textures. Favorite blankets, outfits, nighties.

I cannot express enough how boudoir doesn't have to mean naked. It can be really cute jammies.

Bridal & Maternity Boudoir Sessions https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2020/11/bridal-boudoir/maternity-boudoir According to Wikipedia:

"Boudoir

Boudoir

A boudoir (/ˈbuːdwɑːr/; French: [bu.dwaʁ]) is a woman's private sitting room or salon in a furnished accommodation, usually between the dining room and the bedroom, but can also refer to a woman's private bedroom. The term derives from the French verb bouder (to sulk or pout) or adjective boudeur (sulking)—the room was originally a space for sulking in, or one to put away or withdraw to."

I love shooting boudoir. I love helping people feel beautiful, empowered, strong. Whether it be a sexy boudoir, maternity, or a bridal session. Those intimate moments that they're inviting me in to share with them and capture it to look at for years to come.

Beautiful images for the pregnancy of your last child (her fifth!) to remember this journey. This amazing gift to yourself to remind you the beauty and grace and wonder of creating a life inside you.

Bridal boudoir can be a separate shoot before your wedding day. Or it can be a few private moments before you get dressed for your big day.  If it's done as a separate shoot you could present your partner with a special book for a wedding gift.

YOU choose your level of comfort with how much skin you want to show. Boudoir does NOT mean naked. It means private bedroom. Whether it's at a hotel, a bed and breakfast, your home, or my studio. You are in control of your body at every moment.

Whatever you choose, whatever your style, I am full of ideas to share with you.

Stephanie's Smoking Shoot https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2020/11/stephaniessmokingshoot Why is it so hard for me to choose a title? Why do I always go for an alliteration? Stephanie came to my studio Monday night for a boudoir shoot.  I can't share too much as it's a surprise for her husband! Don't you love personalized gifts? I DO!

A month or so ago I received a message via my website contact form asking for information regarding boudoir shoots. YES! It's that time of year!  From now until about late January ladies (and gents!) inquire about providing their significant others a special gift for any holiday gifts.

I also have inquiries for body positivity shoots which I love as well! These shoots are such an incredible confidence boost!

LOOK AT THIS GORGEOUS WOMAN!

I L-O-V-E my team! MacKenzie and Danielle did a fantastic job styling Stephanie to flow with her outfits and my vision.

Stephanie said, "I brought my whole bedroom!" We ended up picking maybe 4 or 5 outfits. It was so hard to narrow them down!

Stephanie was so sexy, sophisticated, and classy! We had a lot of laughs and time FLEW by!

To book your session go to my contact page and shoot me a message just like Stephanie did!

Woods Winter Minis https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2020/11/woodswinterminis I was going to do a really fun theme for this year's winter minis but with Covid and social distancing and all of that...well, I'll save it for next year.

This year is Cabin Up North, dontcha know?

My favorite little girls got to try it out first this morning.

I really love the snuggly, cozy feeling with all of the textures.

Messy buns and having fun!

It's hard to see but they're both holding the COOLEST things ever: SPARKLY PINE CONES!

This sweet, sweet girl has grown so much!

THIS IS MY MOST FAVORITE IDEA I HAD TODAY! Makes me remember when my sister and I were little.

Shhhhhhh!  They're SEEEEPING!!

Dakota's Boudoir Session https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2020/11/dakotas-boudoir-session Dakota answered my modeling call to have a boudoir shoot in my pop up studio. During our consultation we told each other what we were looking for. My number one goal was for Dakota to feel beautiful and confident.

Dakota wanted to make sure she had photos she felt comfortable with others seeing. I wanted to have her do some "Girl Next Door" looks. She brought meaningful pieces of clothing that are special to her. Dakota brought along pajamas that had been gifted to her while she was breast feeding her baby, her favorite movie series jammies, and pieces special to her and her partner.

We spent about 4 hours together and had so much fun!

What I love the most about this session is that Dakota is beautiful, sassy, cute, and sexy. I want everyone to know that it's not about how much skin you show. It's about you!

Senior Sessions #2: Stories https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2020/11/senior-sessions-2-stories  Like I mentioned in the first Senior Sessions post, "Yes, this photo shoot is about you graduating High School. But it is also a time of expressing yourself and your interests and hobbies. When your friends and family see your prints I want them to say, "That is SO YOU!"'

How do you make it about yourself? How do you show the world who you are right now?

Think of your favorite season. What do you love about it? Bernie loves winter and snowboarding the most. The beautiful sunset over the frozen lake created the most wonderful lighting.

Are you a book lover? An introvert? Extrovert? Ambivert like me? Where you do like to get lost? Where are you when you're not in school? I have been pretty successful in getting into places for photo shoots.

Collin has amazing taste in music and also loved my weirdo ideas.

You are more than welcome to bring someone with you to your shoot. I may even sneak them into a few shots.

If you're a musician I would love to have you bring your instrument! The picture below ended up being part of Collin's Graduation Stationary.

When David told me he loves to work out I had to think a minute then I asked some follow up questions. I found out where he went to the gym and talked to the owner about coming in on a down time so we didn't have to worry about having an audience or being in anyone's way.

Props include jerseys! You may have to ask your Coach to borrow one for your shoot if your school requires you to hand them in. I've known most Coaches to be very accommodating.

I hear from a lot of mom's that their son isn't one to like having his picture taken. A LOT OF MOMS. One of my biggest suggestions is to let me shoot while you set up the next outfit or keep the car running.

I gotta say, my favorite, FAVORITE thing is when I say to someone, "Just trust me." When I see something cool or different or weird as all get out I want a picture of it. Like a decrepit historical building that has an amazing couch from the 70s.

Did you put off your Senior session thinking that the yearbook due date is so far away?  EEP! Don't worry. You're not the first and you definitely will not be the last. I have a Rush Fee to speed things up and put you near the top of the pile.

Bring your props. Any props. I love that Sam brought his console control. If you're a gamer, you need your control!

I dream big and I want you to dream B I G G E R! If you tell me that you have an idea about setting your drums up in the woods, well, by golly, I'm gonna cheer you on!

This is a big one. A HUGE one.

Listen.

Be in the picture with your mom.  And moms, BE IN THE PICTURE! You are gorgeous and you want to be in this moment.

Gun safety must be practiced at all times, of course. I want all hobbies to be included and accepted. I was a nerd. Or a dork. Or a geek? My friends and I actually called ourselves the Normals, but that's not always what the others thought. If you're in any kind of activities that you want showcased let's talk about how to do that.

Of course, we'll also get a couple shots for the parents and grandparents. The traditional shots for the mantel.

I am so excited to see what your ideas are.

Senior Sessions #1: Tips https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2020/11/senior-sessions Senior Sessions are pretty awesome. For many Seniors this is their first big event in life.

Before I continue, I feel like I should explain that this is for High School Seniors. I actually get asked fairly frequently if I mean senior citizens. That's a completely different kind of shoot!

Perhaps the Senior had a confirmation or baptism, maybe an adoption party, or a Sweet 16 or quinceañera. But for most of the Seniors I've photographed, it's the first time it's all about them!

I'm going to share a few tips along the way through these photos of Tori.

You don't always have to look at the camera! Be intimate and in your world. Get into what you love and enjoy. I will guide you from the sidelines if I see something, but I bet you know what to do!You don't always have to look at the camera! Be intimate and in your world. Get into what you love and enjoy. Get into what you love and enjoy. I will guide you from the sidelines if I see something, but I bet you know what to do!
Animals are AMAZING and AWESOME and I want to pet them ALL! If you want to include your four legged friends, I am game! Just know that you may need to bring bribes....er, treats...to reward your buddy. Animals are AMAZING and AWESOME and I want to pet them ALL! Just know that you may need to bring bribes....er, treats...to reward your buddy.
If you know what you're looking for in your portraits tell me! I can keep my eyes peeled for a field of sunflowers. With Tori's sessions, we knew we had to wait for fall for the giant sunflower heads. I can advise you what would be the best time to schedule a session. For some of the coolest shots you gotta be willing to walk through a ditch sometimes. It'll be totally worth it. For some of the coolest shots you gotta be willing to walk through a ditch sometimes. It'll be totally worth it. I am known for pulling over on the way to a location because something caught my eye.
Tori's mom Rachel had a great idea for lighting up the runway with votive candles. Bring props! Tell me your ideas even if you think they may be crazy! I like crazy!

Accessories add so much and are a great way to show your personality! Hats, earrings, ties, belts, shoes, you name it. Bring it along!   This outfit thrilled my innards. How cute is this? I always say bring it and let's try it! This screamed "Material Girl" and I just can't.    Bring extra makeup to touch up your look if needed. Powder, gloss or lipstick, a brush, a mirror. This is also a good time to mention having your nails clean, trimmed (not jagged), and have your nails polished or not. If chipped polish is your jam, go for it. Yes, I can see the dirt under fingernails and so can the camera. Hangnails need to go as well. All these tips stand for toes, too. Yes. Toes. You never know when we'll decide that this shot would be awesome barefoot.

If you want to have several themes for different outfits I'm all for it. If you need help that is what I'm for! Your Senior Session has a consultation for things like this!

Fun fact: Neither of the horses seen so far are Tori's. They were actually my friend Nancy's. During one of our consultations horses came up. I asked my friend if we could come shoot at her house and she was happy to have us!  It actually created a relationship and Tori started taking lessons from Nancy and the boarded her new horse there! Seriously, I cannot express it enough: Tell me what you're looking for!

Yes, this photo shoot is about you graduating High School. But it is also a time of expressing yourself and your interests and hobbies. When your friends and family see your prints I want them to say, "That is SO YOU!"

It's okay to make faces at me. In fact, I want you to do it! Give me your sweet face, your sassy face, your selfie face!
Wear a formal dress. Get it wet. How fun does that sound?! Incredibly. It's the prom version of a Trash the Dress session in the sense that you're okay with it if something happens to it. Or you want something to happen to it.

If you've got an instrument bring them! Play for me! Bring sheet music to throw everywhere! I know how many hours you've dedicated to practicing, performing, humming tunes in your sleep, and hauling the case everywhere. Might as well bring it along one last time!

Lastly for now, be yourself. Always. I love getting to know my clients and figuring out what makes them laugh, tick, or give me the eye roll.

Baby is their first child together and their children are so excited to meet their new sister. We were thrilled to be able to photograph with beautiful flowers and a gorgeous sunset.

Tim & Aimee's Big Day! https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2017/12/tim-aimees-big-day In October Aimee and I had breakfast and discussed her vision for her wedding day.  What really stood out to me was how she and Tim wanted an intimate wedding in their home, surrounded by friends and family. I really loved that. Special details that are customized to their life together.   The bond between sisters.  And love.  Pure love.

Scholar Turns One! https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2017/11/scholar-turns-one I have known Scholar's mom since elementary school.  Ivy is a dear friend of mine.  I was honored to do her first born's newborn session, my first newborn session ever.  I learned a lot that day.

Now I got to do Scholar's one year session.  She was willing to share the spotlight with her three big sisters.  Beautiful girls with a very strong bond.  I enjoy watching them grow up and their personalities grow.

It was tough to narrow it down, trust me, but here are a few of my most favorite images from that day.

Kara & Tim Fischer https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2017/9/kara-tim-fischer What a beautiful day for wedding!  Family and friends from near and far joined the bride and groom at Lost Dog & Fox Hunters' Park for the ceremony, catered barbeque dinner, and fun! Red,white, and blue theme to honor Tim's military service was perfect. Old fashioned yard games and face painting were a hit for young and old alike!  Sunset images on the pier before we all headed into town for karaoke and dancing at Rodney's Tavern in New Ulm.  Here are a few of my favorite images of the day.  Please leave a comment and some love for Tim & Kara!

And baby makes three https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2017/6/and-baby-makes-three Maternity photos are so tender and emotional. They are filled with excitement and expectations. Feeling kicks during the shoot, watching the baby roll around in the tummy, watching mommy glow.

These are the moments I am proud to capture. The moments I'm blessed to be a part of.  Kat and Andy are ready for Baby S to come in July.  They just bought their first home together.  Getting baby's room ready will be so special for the both of them.  I look forward to doing newborn pictures there. And first year milestone sessions.

Welcome to Catherine of the Sea https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2017/5/welcome-to-catherine-of-the-sea I am sure you've noticed that there's been a change here!  Welcome to Catherine of the Sea.  After years of using this name for my Etsy shop, I have decided to make it all encompassing, and include my photography business as well.  My creative, crafting, artisan side is fed by my jewelry, soap, knitting, painting, hand stamping metal, paper crafting, and more.  And my photography side still shoots all the things.  I'm very excited to have my new logos and watermarks.  FINALLY got some marketing items ordered.  It's all coming together and it feels good.

I am going to try to blog more.  Honestly, since Facebook "really took off" I have slacked on this part of everything.  People go to Facebook to see Sneak Peeks, they go there to share the images, etc.  But I'm going to change some things up and really focus on my website and traffic over here.

Luna & Oktoberfest https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2012/10/luna-oktoberfest
I got an email from a Grandma who wanted portraits taken during Oktoberfest of little Luna, a gorgeous 2 year old. Luna got a brand new dirndl!  Grandma has been an active Narren for years and Luna has been exposed to her German heritage since she was born.  Luna chicken danced, polkaed (wow, spell check let me do that?!) and sang during our half hour shoot.  What a doll!

John & Ashley Get Married https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2012/6/john-ashley-get-married Saturday was a gorgeous day, even with a few raindrops.  New Ulm has such beautiful landmarks, historical buildings and natural settings, sometimes it's hard to pick which spots to go to!  John & Ashley had scouted a few areas, and I had one in mind  that I thought they would love.

Best friends and family make the bridal party more special...and a lot more fun.

After the ceremony we took off by ourselves to get some special shots.

My husband doesn't see it, but I swear the tree resembles a heart.  Not completely...just a little.

I love this old gas station.  I think it's just fantastic!

Jill & Tom: the Engagement Session https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2012/3/jill-tom-engagement-session I have to tell you a secret.   I'm pretty weird.  It's true.  Quirky. Eccentric. Outgoing.  Weird.  If you know me, this may be why you love me.  If you don't know me, and we've only emailed and never had a conversation on the phone and then we meet at Country Kitchen in Redwood Falls and you bring your mother with you....BREATHE, CAT!   Whew.  Anyways....

You just might find out first hand that I am a goofy girl.

And you just might find out you're completely okay with it, too.

Jill did a Google search and found me.  I like that.  A lot.  But you know what else I like?  Small worlds. I actually know Jill's cousin, Sarah, through Crystal & Francios.

Anyways, Jill is from Redwood Falls and Tom is from Indiana, but now they live in Arizona together.  August 18th is their big day, and while they were back in Minnesota to plan the wedding, we did an Engagement Session as well.

We visited the fairgrounds and represented Minnesota.

We then went to the first motor lodge in Minnesota.  It was build in the 1940s and it was the first motel that you could drive right up and park in front of your room.  When I asked the construction workers if I could take some pictures there they were pretty...uh, shocked.

 "You've gotta be ^&(^#$^ me!"

Nope.  No, sir, I am not.

Yes, that is their reflection in the mirror propped up against a mattress.

The construction worker asked if I actually just put the ring there.  When I showed him the shot he said, "Oh, that's actually pretty nice!"  Thank you, Sir.

When we drove out to  Alexander Ramsey Park, I finally got to walk across the bridge.  Um. Finally.  I hate heights.  Or falling from heights.  Or thinking about falling from heights.  But I also love cool shots.  And trying new things.  And pushing myself beyond where I've been before.  So, yes, I tackled the bridge.  I am alive, and it wasn't so bad.  Kinda.  On the way back I got motion sick and started hyperventilating, but....I'm okay.  They were super cool about it.  Maybe they laughed at me later, I know I sure did!

I love moss.  :)

Well, all in all, it was a fabulous day.  And you know what?  I know I'm going to really enjoy August 17th & 18th.

Becky & Paul's Maternity Shoot https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2012/3/becky-pauls-maternity-shoot I'm still trying to figure out if I can call it a maternity & paternity shoot.  I have always felt like it's for both people, if they both want to be a part of the shoot.  Hmmm.  I would love any comments on that.

Becky has been my friend since we were in Kindergarten.  I love her, pretty sure she loves me.  :)   This is her first baby.  A lovely boy that will be named Rohn, after an Iditarod racer's son, and a town in Alaska (their favorite place to go).  For all that are wondering, Rohn rhymes with phone.

Rohn is my golden child and I cannot wait to meet him.

Love, love, love this shot.  This is an old one room school house on their property!

This cool truck?  Yep.  Love it.

Pretty sure this may be my favorite.  I love this natural moment.

Until then, I got his Mama to wear a skirt for her maternity shoot.  If you don't know the significance of this....well, Becky doesn't do skirts.   We have had a crazy winter here in Minnesota, and our spring is proving to be just as crazy.  It was a gorgeous day and I am in love with the images I captured of my dear friend.

1+4+3=7+1 https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2012/2/14371-1 Facebook fan page or you're a friend.  If not, maybe you should be.  ;)

This is the awesome, custom made Save the Date (or, StD, as I called it without thinking) that I created for Jeff & Katie.

Wait, wait, wait.  Hold your horses, Cat.  Who are Jeff & Katie?

Sit right back and you'll hear a tale...

I have been friends with Katie and Becky since Kindergarten.  Becky & I were in a scrapbooking group on MySpace and met Layla.  Layla shared an artist's fan page  on Facebook one day.  I gotta admit, I didn't become a fan until later.  But Katie, Katie, became a fan then.  And Katie and the artist hit it off.  She kept it a secret for a while, an online friendship.

Then she took a trip out to New York.

Something was going on.

Fast forward a bit......Katie introduces Jeff to her boys, Ethan & Logan.  They start to plan their first family vacation to DisneyWorld.

Mickey & Minnie guarding the rings...and holding a special place in Jeff & Katie's story.
After a scary medical situation with Jeff, Katie flew there immediately and Jeff knew this was the time to ask Katie the big question.

She said yes!!!

When talking with the boys about where they thought the wedding should be, the boys said, "Dave & Busters!"  At first they laughed about the idea, then they decided it was perfect.

The boys and Jeff have hit it off famously.

1+4+3=7+1 means "I Love You Forever and a Day"

Fitzy was the best ring bearer.  Fantastic job, I must say.

Katie's classic beauty was amazing.
With a fantastically delicious fajita bar for supper and all the games you could possibly want to play waiting right outside the door, what more could you ask for?
I am so pumped that Mitch helped me get everything ready for this shot!

This was such a great night.  A super fun bridal party, great location, new ideas....  And a happy, happy family.

The Winch Family https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/11/winch-family I donated to a fundraiser for a local gentleman a while back. Lucinda was able to help him out by bidding on my Gift Certificates at his Silent Auction. That makes us both feel good, I think, and I surely hope it helped the gentleman and his family a bit.  The day after Thanksgiving I was able to meet with this lovely family for a photo session.    When people live far away from each other, holidays tend to be when they get together.

I photographed Mia on this bed when she was just a newborn.  I brought it along again today to show how much she's grown.  Look at her sitting up!  Foxy, the family (11 year old) puppy), joined her, too.

Gorgeous fall day today!  So nice and warm, lovely colors, not too windy.

Check out Foxy!

I love, love, love this photo of them playing together!  What a sweet moment.

Her cousin bought her a little hat!   Her outfit says, "Mommy's Little Pumpkin".

Mia got tuckered out and loved the soft fur. What a honey bun!

Zach: Class of 2012 https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/10/zach-class-of-2012

Here's a little fact: I am creative.

Another fact: I like creative people.

So when I get asked if we could set up a drum set in the woods, I said yes.

This  is Zach.  He's a drummer.  I'd really like to say "drummist", just to be funny, but I think I'd just come off looking like a weirdo.  Which I am.  However, this is not about that.

It's about Zach graduating High School this year.

He enjoys playing drums, music and hunting.

I am not a fan of guns.  He had to show me the empty barrel several times.  I then let him point it at me. Looks good, huh?

You may recognize his cousin, Tori, playing football with him here.  They've been Best Cousins since they were kiddos.  We had to get some shots of them together, doing what they like to do together.

Don't you love this shot of Zach in his Grandfather's study?   Notice the sign?  It says, "A Round Tuit".  So when Grandpa says he'll get around to it.......

Congrats, Zach.   Have a great Senior year!!!

Colin: Class of 2012 https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/10/colin-class-of-2012-1 Colin is seriously cool.

For real.

His new t-shirts came in.  Some of his favorite musicians.  Primus. Ween. Weezer. Elliot Smith.

Nice.

When we were doing his consult I asked what he was into.  Reading. Guitars. Music.

Got it.  I can do this.

When we're at the library taking a few shots, I told him to grab a book.  Shoot, now I've forgotten what it was called, but I could totally see my husband and I enjoying it.  Colin, tell me what it's called again!  Anyways, he tells me, "I have that book."

Of course he does.

I swear, if I were in High School right now, he'd be in my circle of friends.

Anyways.

And he kept telling me he'll do whatever I want.  That's a Photographer's dream.  No real agenda.  Just creativity and weirdo ideas and finding out how things mesh.

Here is Colin.

Micah & Ashlie https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/10/micah-ashlie

Even though they grew up a couple of hours away from each other, they met in New York five years ago.

Doesn't that sound like the beginning of a romantic comedy?

*sigh*

It's perfect.

If you know me, you know I love romance, comedy, and DIY brides.

They got married on Saturday in New Ulm, Minnesota with friends and family coming from Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, Illinois and beyond.  It was a gorgeous fall day, especially out on Indian Point where they all got ready and we did the pictures before the ceremony at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Ashlie modified her Grandma's wedding gown and they found the perfect material to make a matching veil.  Her maids made their dresses, and they were beautiful.   They even crafted their own bouquets out of a mixture of fresh and silk blooms.  Can you see why I'm digging this?  YES!

Even one of the ushers coordinated his glasses to match his suit and the bridal colors.  That doesn't happen every day, that's for sure!

As soon as I saw the rope swing, I was hooked.  I NEEDED IT IN A PHOTO!

The ceiling on the dance floor was so beautiful with poms, lights and Chinese lanterns.

Congratulations, Ashlie & Micah!

Brittany & Micah: The Wedding! https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/9/brittany-micah-1
A lot of people get so stressed out about all the minute details of planning a wedding, they forget to have fun on the day of the wedding.   Not Brittany & Micah!  Even though they got a text in the middle of the night that their hairdresser was sick, they didn't let that slow them down!  Every few minutes Micah would ask me, "Are you having fun?"  Although it's not my job to have fun at a wedding I'm shooting, it sure is a perk to the job!  They threw a great reception!  I really enjoyed shooting this couple at their Engagement Session and at their Big Day.

Cracked me up that Micah tossed a fifty cent piece.  Made me laugh harder when  the Pastor said he'd better do 2 out of 3!
Micah had great details in his ensemble.  Cufflinks+hat+cane=very sharp.
I love the detail shot of the rings.
Their favorite girl, Emma, wasn't allowed in the church, but she still met them outside decked out in her prettiest attire!

Brittany added shimmer and shine throughout her look!  Love those eyelashes!

Brittany & Micah: The Engagement Session! https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/8/brittany-micah-engagement-session-1 Brittany & Micah are another set of troopers.  It was another hot and buggy day.  Yes, buggy. Buggy means lots of bugs.  I was a super genius and even though I thought I should stop and pick up some water, I didn't.  I didn't feel very good. Lesson learned.

ALWAYS BUY WATER!

Can you spot the Engagement ring?

Emily & Dan: the Wedding! https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/8/emily-dan-wedding Emily & Dan reminded me of my family in so many ways.
#1. My sister's name is Emily.
#2. My sister is a teacher, just like Emily.
#3. My sister's husband's name is Dan.
#4. My parents' wedding colors were yellow & blue.
#5. My mom let her bridesmaid have free choice of the dress.
#6. My aunt (the bridesmaid) made her own dress, as she is an excellent seamstress (as is Deb, Emily's Mom).

Anyways, all these little facts made me nostalgic.  But this blog post isn't about my parents' wedding, or even my sister.  This is about THIS Dan & Emily.

Last Saturday this lovely couple got married in Redwood Falls at Cornerstone Christian Church.  They chose people really dear to them to be in their wedding party: close friends from their congregation, fellow teachers, family members.  The love in that group was tangible.

Blossom Town arranged the flowers.  I loved the fun, whimsical choices of flowers that Emily made.

Pretty sure one of the coolest, "funnest", things I've seen was having the ring bearer and flowers girls have bubble guns as they walked the Processional & Recessional.  So fun!

Congratulations, Dan & Emily.  I wish you many, many decades together!

My point being this: You don't need an event for fabulous photographs of yourself.  You don't want to only have self taken shots, or group photos, etc.   Why not do a fun photo shoot showing off your glorious self!?

Can you tell they're enjoying their time together?  I am realizing now that I picked mostly goofy pictures for this Sneak Peek.  But then again, I also picked way more than I was going to. I guess I was swept away by it all.  I had such a great time with these guys.  It's one of the things I love the most about being a Photographer.  Not just the taking pictures and editing and producing products part.  Nope.  It's the people.  I love people and talking with them.  Hearing their stories and seeing how they interact with each other.  Finding out what it means to them to be a family.  Dear Daphne insisted that I stay for supper.  After some inner debating as to whether it was politeness or obligation or sincerity and all that other mumbo jumbo I put myself through, I stayed.  I had Pimm's for the first time with fresh berries and herbs straight from the garden.  I had homemade onion rings.  Indian potatoes. Steak.  But most of all, I had a wonderful time.

Sure it was still blasted hot outside.  Very uncomfortable at times.  But then the burst of cool air when we came inside accompanied by a cold beer....totally worth it.   Ella & Daphne jumped off the dock for their last shots.  Don't you love it?  Sisterly love.

I'm so, so happy that I was able to photograph them and spend a few hours together.  I can't wait until we can do it all again.

Lately.... https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/8/lately-1
But I know that my friend, Bobbi, would be so very, very happy for me that people are hearing more about me. The pictures I had taken of her and her daughters have become a bit "famous" in our town.  People saw that I captured Bobbi's essence.  And they liked that.  I've been getting calls and emails for photo shoots to capture others' essences, too.   Bobbi would be thrilled that more people were keeping it local, finding out about me, choosing me.

I think about Bobbi, Abby & Savannah every day.  I miss them all terribly and cannot wait until I can hold them all in my arms again.

Lately.... https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/8/lately I've gotta be really honest with you.  I haven't wanted to say much lately online.  I mean, yes, I have been helping my friend with her Twitter contest and I've been doing some Facebook and whatnot daily....but not my usual banter.  The things I want to talk about hurt too much.  The tragic fire in which I lost my friends has really been hard to deal with for so, so many.

But I know that my friend, Bobbi, would be so very, very happy for me that people are hearing more about me. The Z Family https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/7/z-family-1 You know what?  I have the best customers.  I really do.  They are all so willing to get a bit uncomfortable to get some fun pictures.  Either when it's -30 or, like with this family, 102!   YES!  We were outside in a gorgeous field of wild flowers and it was over 100 degrees out.  Ridiculous, and yet, TOTALLY worth it!

Know something else?  I dig snuggly, cuddly, lovey familes.  Well, snuggly, cuddly, lovey people in general.  But really, seeing that in a family is kinda rare at times!  But just look at Mom & Dad snuggling and joking with each other!  See Lexi & Kelsey playing guitar?  Jonathan and Dad playing football.  Mom & Keshia having a moment?  I love this!  LOVE IT!   They even asked if they could just have moments together and I'd photograph them.  Um, YES, PLEASE!  That's what I LOVE!

Chris & Brittany: the Wedding! https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/5/chris-brittany-wedding-1 Chris & Brittany?   The troopers that toughed it out in the hot, humid, sticky weather?  Well, they continued to prove that they're troopers by toughing it out in the rain on their wedding day!  It held out until during the receiving line, then the rain came.

You know what?  I love love.  No kidding.  I'm a sap.  I am emotional and sentimental.  You know what else?  I love it when other people are sappy, too.   I love tight bonds, close friends and even closer bonds between parents and children.   There was a lot of love on May 20.  A lot.   I also love "incentivizing" children to have their picture taken.  Thanks, Mike!

Thank you, Chris & Brittany for allowing me to be part of your super special day!

What a great item for your child's bedroom or for a photo prop!

A classic look!  Gorgeous craftsmanship.
Check them out on Facebook, too!   I will be doing another shoot for them shortly, so be on the watch.  :)

Etsy Shoot: Apple of My Eye Children's Boutique https://www.catherineofthesea.com/blog/2011/3/etsy-shoot-apple-of-my-eye-childrens I put up an Alchemy request in Etsy for a trade.  I'd take pictures of products in exchange for the products.  I got taken down quickly as I was not supposed to mention trading.  But a few people still saw it and contacted me before I was taken down.  :)

Please go check out Apple of My Eye Children's Boutique and Facebook

Super fun costumes, headbands, clips, flowers, etc for your little girl or for yourself! They also make FANTASTIC props and additions for photo shoots! What a pleasure to work with the woman behind the business, Sarahlee. :)

Super cute fairy outfit!

Love the fun bows!  Great for girls or ladies!
